What Psalm is on Mother’s Day?

What Psalm is on Mother’s Day?”Mother’s Day Psalms: The Perfect Way to Honor Mom”

🙏📖 After hearing that she was chosen to be the mother of the world’s Savior, the virgin Mary exclaimed, “My soul magnifies the Lord.” 🌟 Mary’s humble and willing spirit is an example for us all, and her song of praise is one of the purest passages in all of scripture (Luke 1:46-55).

1. The Meaning and Significance of the Magnificat

This passage is known as the “Magnificat”, named after the first word of the canticle in Latin, Magnificat anima mea Dominum, et exultavit spiritus meus in Deo salutari meo.  In it, Mary speaks about the true nature of God and teaches us how to respond to Him.

Each phrase is instructive and can be found echoed in other scripture. Let’s journey through Mary’s ten verses and other similar scriptures to better understand God the Father and to trust in His power, just as Mary did. 🙏🌸

2. Mary’s Prophetic Words and their Echoes in Scripture

Mary said in 2 Nephi 25:13, “My soul doth magnify the Lord, my soul delighteth to prophesy concerning [the Savior], for I have seen his day, and my heart doth magnify his holy name.”

In 3 Nephi 12:16, it is said, “Let your light so shine before this people, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”

John 14:13 states, “And whatsoever thing ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.”

In 1 Samuel 2:1-2, Hannah said, “My heart rejoiceth in the Lord, mine horn is exalted in the Lord…; I rejoice in thy salvation. There is none holy as the Lord.” In 2 Nephi 25:26, it is stated, “And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophesies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins.”

1 Samuel 1:11 says, “O Lord of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaiden, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the Lord all the days of his life.” 2 Nephi 26:33 states,

“The Lord…inviteth them all to come unto him and partake of his goodness, and he denieth none that come unto him, black and white, bond and free, male and female…; and all are alike unto God.” Matthew 11:29 says, “Learn of me, for I am meek and lowly of heart.”

3. Trusting in God’s Power and Mercy, as Mary Did

Mary is referred to as “highly favoured of the Lord” and “chosen and blessed among women” in JST Luke 1:28 and Luke 1:42, respectively. In Proverbs 31:10, 28, 30, it says,

“Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies… Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also… A woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.”

JST Mark 14:8 mentions a woman who anointed Christ with oil and says,

“She [the woman] hath done what she could: and this which she has done unto me, shall be had in remembrance in generations to come, wheresoever my gospel shall be preached; for verily she has come beforehand to anoint my body to the burying.”

Psalm 126:2 says, “Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing: then said they among the heathen, The Lord hath done great things for them.”

1 Nephi 7:11-12 states, “Yea, how is it that ye have forgotten what great things the Lord hath done for us…, and how it is that ye have forgotten that the Lord is able to do all things according to his will, for the children of men, if they exercise faith in him? Wherefore, let us be faithful unto him.”

Alma 37:6-7 says, “By small and simple things are great things brought to pass; and small means in many instances doth confound the wise. And the Lord God doth work by means to bring about his great and eternal purposes.”

4. Women of Faith in Scripture: Mary, Hannah, and the Anointing Woman

Psalm 99:3 says, “Let them praise thy great and terrible name,

“Our Father who is in heaven, may your name be kept holy.” (Matthew 6:9)

“Who shall not fear you, O Lord, and glorify your name? For you alone are holy.” (Revelation 15:4)

His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. “Gather the people to me so that they may hear my words and learn to fear me all the days they live on the earth, and teach their children.” (Deuteronomy 4:10)

“The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love…As high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him…From everlasting to everlasting the Lord’s steadfast love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children.” (Psalm 103)

He has shown strength with his arm; “Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the Lord…The Lord has bared his holy arm before the eyes of all the nations, and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.” (Isaiah 51:9; 52:10)

“And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them, and blessed them.” (Mark 10:16)

“The Lord has redeemed my soul from hell; I have seen his glory, and I am surrounded eternally in the arms of his love.” (2 Nephi 1:15)

5. Praising God and Glorifying His Name: Lessons from the Magnificat and Scripture

He has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts. “For behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble. The day that is coming shall set them ablaze, says the Lord of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch.” (Malachi 4:1)

“He has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty.” (Luke 1:52-53)

“But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:43-45)

He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy. “You will show faithfulness to Jacob and steadfast love to Abraham, as you have sworn to our ancestors from the days of old.” (Micah 7:20)

As he spoke to our ancestors, to Abraham and to his descendants forever. “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has looked favorably on his people and redeemed them. He has raised up a mighty savior for us in the house of his servant David, as he spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, that we would be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us.” (Luke 1:68, 72-73)

Like Mary, may we each magnify the Lord and rejoice in our Savior. May we have faith that the Father is able to do great and blessed things in our own lives. May we trust in his word, justice, and mercy. In doing so, we will find that we are filled with good things and with a greater testimony of God our Eternal Father.
