The most well-known mother in the Bible, Mary conceived Jesus, the Son of God, through the Holy Spirit.
She was visited by the angel Gabriel, who informed her of the unique privilege that she had of bearing God’s Son. She responded in humility, rejoicing in the Lord’s greatness, and He blessed her greatly.
May is the month we celebrate and honour our mothers for their vital role in raising future generations. They teach and lead their households, which ultimately supports the Church.
Proverbs 31:26-29 highlights the importance of mothers in guiding their families and upholding faith.
The Bible tells us of faithful mothers like Mary, who gave birth to Jesus, and Sarah, who had a son named Isaac despite struggling with infertility. Jochebed defied Pharaoh to save her son Moses, while Hannah prayed for a child and was blessed with Samuel.
Lois and Eunice taught Timothy the word of God, helping him grow strong in faith and become a leader in the early church. Let’s take a moment to reflect on the inspiring mother in bible and remember the love and sacrifices our mothers have made for us.

Mary – Luke 1:26-56
Mary is the most famous mother in the Bible, who gave birth to Jesus, the Son of God, by the power of the Holy Spirit.
The angel Gabriel appeared to her and told her of the honor that she had been chosen to bear the Son of God. Mary humbly accepted this privilege and praised God for His greatness. The Lord blessed her abundantly.
Sarah – Genesis 17:15-18:15, 21:1-7; Hebrews 11:11-12
When Sarah and Abraham were old, the Lord promised them a son. Sarah had struggled with infertility for years and didn’t believe it was possible. But the Lord fulfilled His promise, and they had a son named Isaac, which means “laughter.” Abraham was 100 years old when Isaac was born.
Jochebed – Exodus 2:1-10
Jochebed, mother of Moses, defied Pharaoh’s decree that all Hebrew boys be killed by hiding her son for three months. When she could no longer keep him hidden, she placed him in a basket and set him afloat in the Nile River.
Moses was discovered by Pharaoh’s daughter and raised in the palace. Later, he led the Israelites out of their bondage in Egypt.
Hannah – 1 Samuel 1:1-2:21
Hannah wanted a child and prayed for a long time, but the Lord didn’t answer her. She was sad because her husband’s other wife teased her.
Finally, God gave her a son named Samuel, and she dedicated his life to serving the Lord. Samuel became a prophet, and God blessed Hannah with five more children.
Lois and Eunice – 2 Timothy 1:3-5
Lois and Eunice, Timothy’s grandmother and mother, taught him the word of God, which helped him grow strong in the faith and become a prominent leader in the early church. In his second letter to Timothy, Paul acknowledges their spiritual guidance.
“I am grateful to God, whom I worship with a clear conscience as my ancestors did, as I remember you constantly in my prayers, night and day. I yearn to see you again, recalling your tears, so that I may be filled with joy, as I recall your sincere faith that first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and that I am confident lives also in you.” – 2 Timothy 1:3-5
A Mother is one of the greatest gifts of God. There are many precious things that God has bestowed on us however a Mother is one of the unique gifts of God. She is the embodiment of sacrifice and love. When a child is born, a Mother is born…and from that moment onwards, she sacrifices everything for her child.

Before Jesus is born, the angel Gabriel visits Mary in Luke 1 and tells her that she will give birth to a son, even though she is not yet married. Mary visits her cousin Elizabeth, who says in Luke 1:42, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.” Mary sings her famous hymn in Luke 1:46-55.

She acknowledges God in all her ways. She takes her children before the throne of grace and presents them to Jesus, pleading for His blessing upon them. The influence of those prayers is to those children as ‘a wellspring of life. ‘ These prayers, offered in faith, are the support and strength of the Christian mother.
A mother is one who gives us life and brings us to this beautiful world and nurtures us with all her love and care. A mother is one who sacrifices her life for the upbringing of her children. And a mother is one who tries to give us everything that she has even at the cost of her life.
