According to the Dictionary of Bible Themes on Bible Gateway, fathers have a responsibility to love, instruct, and discipline their children in the ways of the Lord. In return, they are to be honored and obeyed by their children.

Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.
